Garway - St Michael's Church :: Shared Description

This ancient church which is located a little way outside of the village of Garway in Herefordshire dates back to the C12th when it was founded as a preceptory (see LinkExternal link ) of the Knights Templar.
Originally as with almost all Templar churches it had a circular nave, part of the foundations of which can be seen on the northern side of the church. These stone-works were excavated in 1927.
The church was altered in the C13th and again in the C17th when the tower, which had been separate, was linked to the main body of the church, but set at about 45° to it.
The interior of the church while quite plain and unadorned has several interesting features such as piscina and a particularly good Chancel Arch which dates to the Templar times and has three orders (concentric arches) two with deep-cut chevrons while the third (innermost) is flat-faced moulded, in Islamic style, no doubt reflecting the Knights' travels to the Holy Land on Crusades.
Not surprisingly the church is EH Grade I listed - see a good write up with much more detail here LinkExternal link
