Chapel of St Skae graveyard
Chapel of St Skae graveyard
The Category B listed Chapel of St Skae graveyard is shown in the middle of the photo from a vantage point on the cliffs. Its early history is not clear but in bygone times St Skae was connected to Restenneth Priory. However, it appears to have been suppressed as a place of worship for in 1567, around the time of the Reformation, it was said that “Dynnynaud neidis na reidare.” The kirks of St Skae and Inchbrayock were united about 1618.
The people buried in the graveyard at Chapel of St Skae were mostly local people and include the Arkleys of Dunninald, the Keiths of Usan and Rev Brewster, D.D., who died in the 43’rd year of ministry in parish of Craig. The inscription on the headstone of George Ramsay indicates that he was born in 1859 but that he had died 19 years earlier in 1840! The burial ground is still in use.
