Westfield Waste Water Treatment Works
This is about my 500th picture posted on this site. If I get to 5,000 and still do not know what everything I am looking at in a sewage works is doing I will be very disappointed in myself! They are everywhere, and I encounter one on my meandering walks at least once a week, but 'dummy-guide' information is scarce.
I was helped out at this site by them not only labelling the machine (compactor) - there was also a manufacturer's model number in view. This machine, it seems, is the first line of defence as it were. All the actual sewage gets through this machine. It is merely in place to screen, or sieve out all the bits of rubbish that end up in the system - cotton buds, tampons, nappies, rags etc. According to the compactor manufacturer, the screen mesh is generally split into 2-3mm squares. Everything that is caught is then squeezed to get any water content out, and this water is put back into the system with the actual sewage. What is left is then compacted down further into what they term 'slugs'. These are then despatched into whatever container the works has decided upon.
