In the abbey precincts and now the vicarage, Abbey House was formerly the abbot's lodging or guest house. The house has medieval origins with major restructuring in the early 16th century, the south front was refaced in the late 18th century with alterations and extensions in the late 19th century and the mid 20th century. Timber framed with walls in a mixture of lias stone, rubble stone and brick under a tile roof. Listed, grade I, with details at: LinkExternal link
Tewkesbury Abbey was founded in 1087 by Robert FitzHamon, the Norman abbey, built to house Benedictine monks was consecrated in 1121. At the dissolution of the monasteries the abbey church was sold to the parishioners for 453. Built mainly of limestone ashlar with a tiled roof, there were alterations and additions in the 13th and 14th centuries. The abbey underwent a major restoration under Sir Gilbert Scott in 1875-1879. The market town of Tewkesbury is sited at the confluence of the River Severn and the River Avon, some 9 miles north of Gloucester, close to the border with Worcestershire. Founded in Saxon times, the town thrived and there are many medieval and Tudor buildings including Tewkesbury Abbey, bought by the townspeople to use as their parish church. One of the decisive battles of the Wars of the Roses was the Battle of Tewkesbury, which took place on 4 May 1471.
