St Bartholomew, Tosside
St Bartholomew, Tosside
The modest church building in this small village has an interesting history: it was originally known as Houghton Chapel, and was a chapel-of-ease in the large parish of Gisburn in the early 17th century (the font is dated 1619), largely rebuilt in 1873 after it became a parish church in 1870 and took the name Tosside. Since a more recent pastoral reorganisation in 2019 it is again a chapel-of-ease, this time to the parish of Slaidburn.

Slaidburn, and this church, are now in Lancashire but the county boundary is immediately east of the churchyard, and the whole village was once in Yorkshire, which is why the parish is part of the diocese of Leeds (previously Bradford) rather than that of Blackburn.

The building is listed grade II (list entry 1072177) but was not open for visiting when I called. Information from "Outstanding Churches in Craven" published by the Diocese of Bradford, 1985.
