Old Spey Bridge
Old Spey Bridge
Until a few weeks ago, the Old Spey Bridge was a great place for sauntering gently across, enjoying the uninterrupted view of the River Spey and safe from passing traffic. However the bridge was closed for the replacement of the railings, which had been deemed unsafe. When it reopened, what a disappointment. The railings have not been replaced. They have been supplanted by new railings several feet in from the original ones, so high that walking between them feels like being in a cage. The remaining space is so narrow that it has been necessary to define the pedestrian and cycle paths. There is no longer an unobstructed view of the river, and in spite of the fact that the best views were upstream, pedestrians are now confined to the downstream side, closer to the (now equally obstructed) view of the unbeautiful new road bridge. The ambience of the old bridge has been totally destroyed. Compare with NJ3359 : Baxters Visitor Centre from the Spey Bridge.
