Former railway junction, Whitby
Former railway junction, Whitby
The site of Prospect Hill junction in Whitby. The path to the right is the route of a railway route which descended a steep gradient to join the Esk Valley line as it entered Whitby Town station. The path to the left continued south to Robin Hood's Bay and Scarborough. The railway closed in 1965.

The path to the left now forms part of the Cinder Track walking and cycling trail, which follows the former railway from Whitby to Scarborough. It is also on the route of National Cycle Network route 1.
Old Scarborough to Whitby line

The railway line between Scarborough and Whitby was opened in 1885 and was very popular with holiday makers. It opened up the North Yorkshire coastline to tourists. It was closed in 1965. The route now is a cinder track and forms part of National cycleway 1 (Dover to John O' Groats). It is also a popular walking trail. A full history of the line can be read at LinkExternal link

The National Cycle Network

The National Cycle Network is a network of cycle routes. It was created by the charity Sustrans LinkExternal link (Sustainable Transport), aided by a National Lottery grant.

Many routes aim to minimise contact with motor traffic, though 70% of them are on roads. In some cases the NCN uses pedestrian routes, disused railways, minor roads, canal towpaths, or traffic-calmed routes in towns and cities.

National Cycle Network Route 1

National Route 1 of the National Cycle Network is a long distance cycle route connecting Dover and the Shetland Islands mainly via the east coast of England and Scotland. The route is all signed and open except between London and Woodbridge (in Suffolk) and between Whitby and Staithes (in Yorkshire).
