Rudhale Monuments - William & Anne and Col. William
Rudhale Monuments - William & Anne and Col. William
The fine table of tomb William (1460 - 1530) and his wife Anne with the standing figure of Colonel William (d.1651) behind them.
From 1496 the older William was Attorney General to Prince Arthur (son of Henry VII and elder brother of the future Henry VIII) until Arthur's death in 1502. In 1509 he served in the same office to Queen Katherine of Aragon until his own death in 1530
Colonel William was a Cavalier in the Royalist army who led a local troop in a skirmish at Wilton Bridge. Rather inexplicably his effigy is attired in the clothes of a Roman soldier. He was the last male of the Rudhale dynasty.
Note the family name is sometimes given as Rudhall rather than Rudhale which is not too surprising as they lived at Rudhall Manor, 2 miles to the northeast of Ross at Phocle Green. This magnificent C14th house still stands and is a private family home.

St Mary the Virgin, Ross on Wye

Grade I listed

The church consists of a nave with north and south aisles, chancel, a south chapel, north and south porches and a west tower with spire.

The nave, aisles and chancel were built in the late 13th century.
The tower and spire were added in the early 14th century, and the chancel was extended in the mid-14th century.
In 1510 the Markye Chapel was added to the south aisle.

There was a major restoration between 1862 and 1878.

There are several stints and 17th-century monuments to the Rudhall family.
The east window glass is from circa 1430, although the tracery lights are 19th century.
