Llandovery / Llanymddyfri Castle

All that remains of Llandovery / Llanymddyfri Castle is two parts of the ruinous walls of its keep set upon its motte (hillock or mound). It is situated on a prominent natural outcrop overlooking Afon Bran, to the south of the car park in central Llanymddyfri (Landovery).
A motte and bailey castle was first mentioned here in 1113. Three years later the castle, then in the ownership or stewardship of Richard fitz Pons (Lord of Cantref Bychan) was attacked by Gruffydd ap Rhys ((c. 1090 1137) Prince of Deheubarth) who tried to breach it and set it on fire, but he failed; he nevertheless burnt the outer castle (bailey), but then fled after a strong defence.
The castle's ownership swung to and fro between the English and Welsh until it finally fell to Edward I in 1277 - though it was briefly recaptured by Llywelyn ap Gruffudd in 1282. A striking sculpture of this Welsh warrior knight is to be found on the motte beside the castle's ruins. However Llywelyn died later that year and it was then in English hands ever after, and in the next centuries became ruinous.
What is seen now dates from the C13th - after Llywelyn's death.
