Torpoint ferry
Torpoint ferry
One of two replacement chain ferries built c1960 with a capacity of 30 cars. It's worth noting that this upgrade almost coincided with the opening of the Tamar Bridge and closure of the Saltash Ferry upstream (SX4358).
A third ferry entered service in 1966. The landing ramps were enlarged in 1972 to enable all 3 ferries to operate simultaneously. In the 1980s, all 3 ferries were stretched to increase capacity to 50 cars. See SX4455 : Torpoint Ferry, "The Plym". They were replaced with the current ferries in 2005. [Wikipedia]
