The once natural pond here was fed by a stream. In the 19th century, it was put in a culvert to create a balancing lake for storm water overflow in order to prevent flooding in Raydene Road below. Over the years, the water became heavily polluted from road run-off and the number of surrounding trees grew significantly. The ponds were very unpleasant an no longer supported wildlife.

In 1991, Plumstead Common Environment Group, with the support of Greenwich Council, took the initiative to restore the ponds. Volunteers built a weir which would help to clean the ponds up and help wildlife. The reed bed filters many of the pollutants. The weirs create a holding pond, the water from which is oxygenated as it flows into the upper pond and on into the lower pond.
