Bealach Chual' an Sgairt is a Gaelic version of the name of the old route across Trotternish between Kilmuir and Staffin. Other names used for the bealach are the close homophones Ollasgairte NG4367 : Bealach Ollasgairte and Collascard. NG3967 : Track on Creag Collascard

The Gaelic name on this sign translates as "the pass that heard a scream", possibly of the wind howling through the pinnacles and precipices of the Quiraing. But it seems more likely that all three names have their origin in the Norse kollr (hill) and skardhr (pass or bealach) and thus they all mean “the hill pass”.
