Cocklock Scar
Cocklock Scar
No-one walking in this area can fail to notice that the southwestern spurs of the Cross Fell range above the Eden valley sport a number of detached peaks, some quite distinctive. In detail, many of these spurs seem to have gaps, and Cocklock Scar is one of these. It's quite a steep-sided and deep valley for what is a tiny misfit stream, barely more than a linear bit of bog. But at the end of an ice age, when the Eden Valley was full of glacier, meltwater from higher up found its way along the sides of the glacier and cut steep-sided channels more or less parallel with the main valley, leaving these gaps and isolated hills.
