J2627 : Survey Point, Spelga Dam

Survey Point, Spelga Dam
Survey Point, Spelga Dam
What I believe is an old survey point established during the building of Spelga Dam in the Mournes. Similar to a triangulation pillar, this appears to consist of a solid concrete base with a three legged iron support atop - a theodolite would have been attached here. There are several more I believe, both around Spelga and in other areas of the Mournes such as Ben Crom reservoir.
Spelga Dam

Spelga Dam is a reservoir in the Mourne Mountains. It was constructed 1953-1957 and supplies water to parts of Counties Armagh and Down. Together with nearby Fofanny Reservoir, it can supply 6,500,000 gallons of water per day and discharges 500,000 gallons a day back into the River Bann.

See LinkExternal link for a video on the construction of the dam.
