Scandal Beck below Smardale Bridge
Scandal Beck below Smardale Bridge
Although Scandal Beck is initially fed by springs from limestone percolation water (which is very clear) at Stennerskeugh five and half kilometres to the southeast, it already has some input from the peat moors of High Dolphinsty, and by the time it reaches Smardale it has also picked up enough water draining off the Howgill Fells to be very peaty, which contrasts very markedly with a spring-fed stream coming in from the west just to the north of the bridge seen in this photo. It continues to flow north through the Smardale Gill National Nature Reserve, and eventually joins as a left-bank tributary to the River Eden.
