SARRATT

Upper left side
The village pond
Village ponds were once an essential feature of many settlements, notably in
areas that lacked running water. They were used by both local livestock and
those passing though on droving routes. In times of drought they may have been
used by the villagers for water.

The village pond and wildlife
In Britain, ponds provide a habitat for a range of plants, insects, birds and
mammals. Many village ponds have considerable conservation value.
Village ponds with good marginal vegetation offer an excellent habitat to a
variety of species including dragonflies, damselflies and a range of birds.
They are often ideally located to be of amenity and educational value.

Upper right
Cricketers Pond Restoration Project
One of the main aims of the project was to reduce the amount of pollutants
such as oil reaching the pond. A reed bed was created in front of the main
inlets to form a natural barrier filtering the water as it enters the pond.
This will also help to prevent the build up of algae and provide an excellent
habitat for a variety of species.
The trees on the edge of the pond are pollarded to reduce the amount of shade
on the pond enabling emergent vegetation to develop.

Lower middle
Cricketers Pond has an interesting history.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the landlord of the nearby public
house was also the village wheelwright and undertaker. The wooden wheels with
iron rims were put into Cricketers Pond to shrink the hot iron onto the
wheels. Also, carts were driven into the pond to swell up dried out wheels.

At the foot of the board it says the following:
This board remembers the services given by Val Cumming MBE to the people of
Sarratt.
