Young Coots on the Manchester, Bolton and Bury Canal
Young Coots on the Manchester, Bolton and Bury Canal
Two coot chicks, approximately 2 weeks old, at the side of the canal near the fishing lodge behind Sheaf Field Walk.

Coots are medium-sized water birds that are members of the Rallidae (rail) family. Whilst adults have predominantly black plumage, the young chicks have orange-tipped plumes which make them very distinctive (and conspicuous to would-be predators such as foxes). The orange plumage usually begins to fade after about a week.
