Brighton: sea front
In the distance, the remains of the West Pier. Designed by Eugenius Birch and opened in 1866, the West Pier closed in 1975 and has been decaying slowly ever since. There were initially projects to reopen it but collapses in 2002 and fires in 2003 left it beyond repair, in the view of English Heritage; subsequently, some controlled demolition has further reduced the remaining structure.
For images of the West Pier in 1990, when much more of it remained, see TQ3003 : West Pier, Brighton and TQ3003 : West Pier, Brighton (detail).
The seafront here provided a location for Richard Attenborough's film "Oh! What a Lovely War!"
