Glenstocken Shore
Glenstocken Shore
Along with Barcloy Quarry to the west, Glenstocking Quarries were once famed for their production of millstones in the 18th century. They probably made use of the coarse sedimentary rocks on the shore. Despite the inconvenience of being exposed only at low tide, the coastal location made transport of the finished millstones an easier task. The sea may have also been used to work the stone. By inserting dry timber into drilled holes the incoming tide would swell the wood and split the stones into the required thickness. Abandoned millstones are all that remains of the millstone quarry on the Colvend shore, near Rockcliffe.
