Temple Newsam farm - the Great Barn
Temple Newsam farm - the Great Barn
The barn was built in 1694 with stone from nearby quarries and timber from the estate itself. Dimensions 112'7" x 27'4" x 40' high. There is a central arch through which haycarts could be driven to offload their hay into the loft above. Possibly the UK's first drive-thru. The structure is listed grade II (List entry 1255911).
Temple Newsam :: SE3432

A large country estate a few miles east of the city of Leeds, Temple Newsam dates back to Norman times and took its name from ownership by the Knights Templar in the 12th century. After a complex history (see Wikipedia etc. for more details) it is now owned by Leeds City Council. There is a charge for entry to the house and educational farm, but the extensive grounds, mostly landscaped by 'Capability' Brown, are free to use and are crossed by several public footpaths.

The house itself is listed grade 1, the stable block grade 2* and several other features grade 2; the park as a whole is listed under "parks and gardens".
