Temple Newsam farm - dovecote
The purpose of this building is not immediately obvious, but openings in the roof allowed free passage for the hundreds of doves or pigeons that nested in pigeon-holes within the building. They were reared for food, and the guano used for fertiliser and laundry. It is listed grade II (list entry 1255948).
Temple Newsam :: SE3432

A large country estate a few miles east of the city of Leeds, Temple Newsam dates back to Norman times and took its name from ownership by the Knights Templar in the 12th century. After a complex history (see Wikipedia etc. for more details) it is now owned by Leeds City Council. There is a charge for entry to the house and educational farm, but the extensive grounds, mostly landscaped by 'Capability' Brown, are free to use and are crossed by several public footpaths.

The house itself is listed grade 1, the stable block grade 2* and several other features grade 2; the park as a whole is listed under "parks and gardens".
