The statue, by sculptor Andrew Brown, was unveiled in March 2018, design being selected from a shortlist of 5 following public consultation.

Mary Barbour was a political activist who came to prominence during the Rent Strikes of 1915. She was one of 5 women to become the first women councillors on Glasgow City Council, all elected in 1920.
