Salcombe Castle, Devon
Salcombe Castle, Devon
Also known as Fort Charles stands just off the North Sands beach at the entrance to the Kingsbridge Estuary.
Built in the reign of King Henry the Eighth as a defence against French and Spanish invaders.
It was the last castle to hold out against the parliamentary forces of Oliver Cromwell at the end of the English Civil War. It was then deliberately ruined.
