National Trust Information Board at Wenlock Edge (1)
Situated in the Wenlock Edge car park off the B4371 Stretton Road, this information board shows a map of the Wenlock Edge which has been protected by the National Trust. To the left of the map, there is the following wording:

WENLOCK EDGE
A fossil-rich limestone ridge with a wealth of wildlife

Natural Diversity
WENLOCK EDGE'S wooded limestone escarpment stretches for thirty kilometres between Ironbridge and Craven Arms 'like a great wave about to break'. Packed into this narrow country are panoramic views, quarries and limekilns, paths and green lanes, fossils and rare flowers.
Caring for the Edge
To protect this unique but threatened landscape, the National Trust has been acquiring sections of the Edge since 1982. Twelve and a half kilometres of Wenlock Edge, with further land at Wilderhope, are now preserved for everyone to enjoy, for ever.
Ridge and Vale Scenery
This simplified section shows the rocks that make up Wenlock Edge. Two tilted beds of hard limestone form the parallel escarpments of Wenlock Edge and View Edge, while the alternating layers of softer shale have eroded to create the gentle vales of Ape, Hope and Corve Dale.

To the right of the map, there is the following wording:

'Blue Remembered Hills'
Fading from green to hazy blue at the horizon, the ancient woodland straddling Wenlock Edge emphasises the dramatic length of the limestone ridge.

MUCH WENLOCK
The Much Wenlock National Trust car park sits in an old quarry called Kiln Leasow field. Within the rock face here you'll see the bedded Wenlock Limestone
dipping towards the road where it disappears beneath the softer, overlying Lower Ludlow Shales.
Until the 1840s local farmers quarried and burnt the limestone here to spread on their fields as a primitive fertiliser. Today the limestone grassland supports a rich variety of flowering plants, including several species of orchid.

WALKS
Discover Wenlock Edge for yourself on seven circular walks. Two fascinating walks begin at the small central gate at the top of this car park field; just follow the colour-coded wooden waymarkers in the same colour as your chosen route, as shown here.
Detailed walking guides are available from the information point in this car park, the National Trust, tourist information centres, bookshops, and other outlets. (The walks in question are Jenny Wind, Lea Quarry, Lime Kiln, Longville Coppice, Major's Leap, Presthope and Wilderhope Coppice).
