Statue of Captain John Smith
Statue of Captain John Smith
Statue of Captain John Smith, who was the commander of the RMS Titanic, he was one of the 1513 who lost their lives when the ship struck an iceberg on its maiden voyage in April 1912. The memorial was sculpted by Lady Kathleen Scott, widow of the late polar explorer, Robert Falcon Scott; it cost 740 to commission and manufacture and was unveiled in June 1914. The statue stands in Museum Gardens. He was born in Hanley in Staffordshire in January, 1850. Not sure why there is a statue in Lichfield other than Hanley being in the diocese of Lichfield.

The plaque inscription reads:
"Commander Edward John Smith, R.D., R.N.R. Born January 27. 1850. Died April 15. 1912. Bequeathed to his countrymen the memory and example of a great heart and a great life and a heroic death. Be British."

The statue is Grade II listed, see: LinkExternal link
