The Needles from north of Kame
The Needles from north of Kame
Rounding Kame heading northwards towards Rea Wick, the sea kayaker is greeted by a sight to excite. The steeply dipping sandstones of the Walls formation (Old Red Sandstone) have formed a series of sharp sea stacks, known as the Needles, one with a natural arch, here highlighted by the two cormorants silhouetted within it. The kayaker in yellow is heading for a roomy cave in the corner of the geo (which already contains several of our group). Further exploration revealed that the arch extended down to sea level and, whilst narrow, proved passable in a sea kayak
