The Drongs
The Drongs
The Ness of Hillswick is very exposed to the west and south and on our arrival on Shetland a few days earlier, there had been a force six gusting eight wind with a lot of swell, so we'd had to wait some time for settled conditions to paddle round. With a metre or two of swell still running, we still couldn't get close in to the cliffs and skerries but it was certainly well worth our while to paddle round the outside of the Drongs - impressive stacks made of the very red Ronas Hill Granite, part of the Northmaven pluton of late Devonian to early Carboniferous age - about as young as rocks come hereabouts ! The Hillswick Ness lies beyond, separated by a kilometre of open sea, and by two faults, the metamorphic rocks in the grey cliffs being far more ancient than the Drongs - Psammites and Semipelites of Neoproterozoic age (perhaps correlated with the Moine supergroup in mainland Scotland).
