Lochinch Castle and Castle Kennedy Gardens are the home and Gardens to the Earl and Countess of Stair. Lochinch Castle, completed in 1867, replaced Castle Kennedy which was destroyed by fire in 1716. Sadly, the early history and pictures of Castle Kennedy were lost in the fire, but the castle is known to have been standing in the 14th century. There are no surviving pictures of the castle in habitable condition. However, the castle has been extended, and you will notice that the two wings on the keep are not part of the original structure.

Sir James Dalrymple of Stair, who married Margaret Ross, heiress of Balneil, was the first of the Dalrymple family to own land in Wigtownshire. Sir James was a distinguished lawyer, whose books on law still form the basis of present day Scottish Law. He was appointed President of the Court of Session in 1671, and then removed from that office in 1681. He was then re-appointed in 1688. He was created Viscount Stair the peerage of Scotland in 1690, and died in 1695.

He was succeeded by his son, a Field Marshall who was also Ambassador to the court in Paris. This influenced the layout of the garden at the time, and the Castle green was reputedly laid out on similar lines to Versailles. The fire was started when the Field Marshall was returning to Castle Kennedy and the staff were airing his bedding. The resulting fire destroyed the castle.

The garden development continued after the Field Marshall's death, but later generations allowed the gardens to fall into disrepair. It was not until the nineteenth century when the present house, Lochinch Castle, was built that the gardens were restored and further extended. At this time many new plants were being brought to Britain from around the world, and the favourable climate at Castle Kennedy meant that often they were sent to the gardens.
