Collywell Bay
The detached sea-stack called Charley’s Garden NZ3376 : Charley's Garden, Collywell Bay lies just off Collywell Bay Road in Seaton Sluice and is an isolated sandstone pinnacle which adopted its name from a local villager, Mr Charles Dockwray, who cultivated the top of it. He is said to have successfully cultivated vegetables there, presumably when it was much larger and still connected to the mainland.

The purple-stained Permian sandstone from which it is made has been named by Geologists as Charley's Garden Sandstone. It is part of the Tynemouth to Seaton Sluice SSSI. The geology of Collywell Bay is complex with sandstones, shales, mudstones and coal seams at right angles to the coast. The sandstones are thickly bedded, well jointed with a blocky appearance. They are the most resistant of the rock types to erosion by the sea and gave rise to the shape of the bay and its rocky headlands.

See disscussion about erosion of this coastline, including measures taken to protect the cliff face below the houses on Collywell Bay Road, in Chapter 8, 'Changing Coastal Environments' in Changing Environments by Susan Bermingham (2000).
