Old and New routes over the moors
Before the road became more formal in the early 20th century, horse traffic had a choice of braided trackways - all becoming gradually more deeply incised into the moorland.
Once committed, with a heavy cart load there would be little chance of turning round or getting out of the rut.
Meeting oncoming traffic would be potentially tricky.

A common product to ship north was Lime, while southbound traffic was often Pork and Dairy products - but like today it was surprisingly well used for many reasons.
