West House
West House
Due to the steep wooded slope by the farmhouse, most of the barns are on the hill behind.
The house is in a sheltered spot but a cold and sunless place in winter as the hillside faces almost due north.

The rushy field below is the watershed between the Esk via Sleddale Beck and Commondale or The Tees by Kildale and the Leven.

Towards the end of the last Ice Age, The Esk was dammed by ice to the east. Lake Esk drained to the north through here, forming a channel through the moors which was very useful for the Middlesbrough to Whitby Railway line.
