Alpacas in Glendale
Alpacas in Glendale
These beasts have been at Lephin for several years. They are well adapted to the mild moist climate of Skye and a shop has opened in Dunvegan offering products made from their wool. For a close-up see NG1749 : Hebridean alpacas.

The Alpaca is a South American pack animal found in Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Chile. Along with its cousin the Llama it is a member of the Camelid family.

Alpacas have been popular in the UK since the 1990s and were bred for their wool which at the time was worth significantly more than that of sheep wool. Now they are generally bred as pets.
