Rough grassland
Rough grassland
A rich mixture of flooded gravel pits, grassland, reedbed and willows
This beautiful nature reserve consists of four lakes which are former gravel pits. The lakes are interspersed with grassland and ancient hedgerows which provide habitats for a myriad of bird species. Ducks and geese swim on the open water and gulls breed on the islands, kingfishers hunt in the streams and songbirds search the hedgerows for food.
This reserve forms a part of the Ouse Valley Living Landscape one of the priority areas for conservation.
In summer dragonflies dance along the margins of the lakes and butterflies soak up the sun. At the base of the hedges and out in the grassland wildflowers bloom attracting more nectar feeding invertebrates.
In winter wildfowl numbers grazing on the grassland increase as the resident population is joined by birds migrating south to avoid the harsh arctic winters.
