St Clement of Rome church, Fiskerton

Grade I listed.

The church dates from the 11th C onwards and consists of nave with north (late 12th C.) and south aisle (14th C.), chancel and a west tower possibly originally from the 11th C, which was encased in ashlar and raised in the 14th C.

The church at Fiskerton is dedicated to St Clement of Rome, an early Bishop of Rome and the north door of this church dates back to Norman times; with Norman architecture also present between the nave and chancel and in the north aisle. On the left of the north aisle are the remains of a staircase thought to lead to the former rood loft which is no longer in place.

The whole church was restored in 1863 and all the stained glass and interior furniture belong to the 19th or 20th century. The east window was designed by Messrs Burlison & Grylls and was a gift from Canon Vines, Rector for 52 years. The east window depicts St Hugh of Lincoln, St Mary, St John and St Ethelred of Stow.

On the floor of the Lady Chapel is a brass of a priest in a cope, on which is an oak-leaf motif. This is thought to be Thomas Dalyson, once Rector of this parish. In the south aisle is the "Skepper" window, donated by the Skepper family and designed by William Wailes.

The oldest part of the church is the tower. The outside of the tower is from the 15th century however the inside reveals that a square outside has been built around an older round tower. Round towers are common in Norfolk but not in Lincolnshire.
