The ‘Pleasure Wherry’ Solace moored at Wroxham Broad.

A wherry is a type of boat that was traditionally used for carrying cargo or passengers on rivers and canals, and is particularly associated with the River Thames and also with the Broadland rivers of Norfolk and Suffolk. In the late 18th century the name was given to the Norfolk wherry, a kind of sailing barge with large sails which was developed to replace an earlier cargo boat, the Norfolk Keel. The 'Pleasure Wherry' evolved in the late nineteenth/early twentieth centuries as railways replaced cargo business that had supported the traders. Enterprising owners realised that converting their boats to carry passengers was a way to replace the lost income, especially as the Broads were at the same time being discovered as a destination for tourism and recreation. At first, they simply featured hammocks and a stove in the hold of a trader but later, boat builders began to make craft specifically for pleasure sailing and holidays, incorporating living quarters instead of a cargo hold (LinkExternal link Wikipedia). Solace was built at Reedham in 1903.
Wroxham Broad :: TG3116

Wroxham Broad has an area of 34.4 hectares and a mean depth of 1.3 metres. It lies to the west of the River Bure, with two navigable openings between river and broad. The broad is popular for sailing and is the home of the Norfolk Broads Yacht Club. It is also an important habitat for broadland flora and fauna.
