The ends, coping and balls appear to be of a coarse limestone; not local as far as is known. The light grey rubble infill is the Devonian limestone from St Marychurch and Babbacombe north of Torquay. It seems obvious, but the seafront is raised above the level of the Den grassy open space. Centuries ago, East Teignmouth was a beach with fishermen's cottages and saltmarsh at the back before it was all filled in and the town developed as a resort. Best guess for the construction of the seafront road and promenade is around 1900.
