Graveyard, Redwing Chapel
Graveyard, Redwing Chapel
Redwing Chapel is located just over a quarter of a mile WNW of Garrigill. It was built as a Congregational (Independent) Meeting House in 1756 (denoted by the date on the door lintel) as a replacement for one at Loaning Head now used as a house, and continued in use till 1977. The chapel is rubble-built, with tall round-headed windows dressed with red sandstone, and stands as a reminder of the variety of dissenting denominations which flourished among the mining communities of Alston Moor in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The graveyard and church now lie isolated in a field with hardly a path to the north-easterly graveyard gate. It goes unremarked on the latest maps, and is little visited although passed closely by the Pennine Way.
