NS3680 : Pit beside fence

Pit beside fence
Pit beside fence
This pit is one of a pair; there is one on each side of the fence (the fence itself is the boundary that is shown on the 1:25000 map). The other pit of the pair is shown in NS3680 : Large pit. The two pits, though separated by the fence, are close together, almost touching.

The fence is the most obvious boundary here, but it stands on the line of an old dry-stone dyke, which is now overgrown with turf. Along the line of that dyke, there are other places where pits can be seen in pairs. They may have been borrow pits connected with the building of the dyke, but there are other possibilities for their origins. I have given them a "bomb crater" tag, acknowledging that possibility, to allow the pictures to be found more easily during searches.

In the present picture, the wooded Killoeter ridge makes up the central part of the background, and part of the Firth of Clyde can be seen on the left.
