Large pit
Large pit
This is one of a pair of pits; its opposite number is nearby, but is less conspicuous, mainly because it is on the other side of the fence (which forms the boundary shown on the 1:25000 map); the other pit is shown in NS3680 : Pit beside fence. The fence is on the line of an old dry-stone wall, now low and overgrown with turf.

I had previously taken this to be a bomb crater. That is still a possibility. However, this is just one of several pairs of pits close to line of the dry-stone wall, and near the path that is marked on the path. Though old, the pits may instead have originated as borrow pits, or something similar. For that reason, I do not wish to be dogmatic here about their origins; I have given them a "bomb crater" tag to allow the pictures to be found more easily during searches.

Loch Lomond is in the background.
