Tumuli on Snail Down
Tumuli on Snail Down
Snail Down is an Early Bronze Age barrow cemetery on Salisbury Plain. There are over thirty barrows of many types: bowl, bell, disc, and saucer. The land surrounding the cemetery is covered with the remains of ancient enclosures, ditches and other signs of habitation, indicating that this area was in use for millennia. It is now part of the MOD's dry training range; as no live firing occurs, it is open for people to roam provided an exercise is not taking place. (Note: the position of the photographer is not precise, given the profusion of barrows).
