Kinvara quayside
Kinvara quayside
A Galway hooker (a traditional design of boat originally used for fishing in Galway Bay) moored by Kinvara Quay.

The Quay was built around 1800 and is included in the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage - see LinkExternal link.

In the background, above the line of buildings in The Square, is Seamount College. Originally Seamount House, it was built in the early 19th Century by the Butler family of Bunahow in County Clare. From 1847 it was the home of Dr Dennis Hynes, who had married one of Captain Theobald Butler's daughters. Dr Hynes who was the local doctor in the famine years of the mid 19th Century and also co founder and one time President of the Irish Medical Association. He lived in Seamount House until his death in 1875.

Dr Hynes' daughter gave the house to the Sisters of Mercy in 1922 and it became a convent and girls' boarding school. Since 2010, following a campaign against closure, trusteeship was transferred to the Bishop of Galway. It is now a voluntary co-educational Catholic secondary school.

Also included in the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage - see LinkExternal link.
