Bunratty Castle, Durty Nelly's and Bunratty Bridge
Bunratty Castle was built in around 1425 by the MacNamara family and was the fourth castle on the site. In the early 18th century, after various owners over its history, it was purchased by the Studdert family, but in 1804 they built and moved into Bunratty House (see R4561 : Bunratty House). Over the course of the 19th century the castle fell into disrepair, culminating in the collapse of the roof. In 1956 it was purchased by the 7th Viscount Gort, who restored it with support from the Office of Public Works. In 1960 it was opened to the public and is now part of Bunratty Folk Park.

Included in the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage - see LinkExternal link.

Durty Nelly's is one of Ireland's oldest pubs, dating from 1620. It is named after Durty Nelly, erstwhile toll keeper of Bunratty Bridge, who legend has it had her own recipe for Poteen which had curative powers.

In front of the pub is the oldest of the three current Bunratty bridges over the Ratty (or Owenagarney) River, built in 1804 by Thomas Stoddert of Bunratty Castle. Included in the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage - see LinkExternal link. At the time it was the largest single arched bridge in the country.

See R4560 : Bunratty Bridges for a view off all three bridges - this photo is taken from the 1960s bridge.
