'Watch the birdy', Foulshaw Moss
A newly-constructed boardwalk floated on the raised bog of Foulshaw Moss. The big attraction at the moment is a pair of nesting ospreys LinkExternal link - the first in southern Cumbria in modern times. The parent birds tried last year but abandoned the eggs due, probably to inexperience. One was born at Kielder and the other at Bassenthwaite and here they have produced two chicks*. Apparently, the adults fish in the nearby Kent estuary and also Leighton Moss at low tides. A good telescope or pair of binoculars is necessary to see anything from this distance.
* Recent blog reports LinkExternal link state that there are actually THREE chicks (2 females, 1 male) which have just been ringed (10th July, 2014).
