The summit of Pen-y-ghent is formed of gritstone. This outcrop is south of the summit. It is clear that the outer rocks are separating and slipping downhill. Presumably, there will eventually be a collapse, which will add to the boulder field below. (See SD8372 : Boulder field, Pen-y-ghent.)
