NS2776 : Masonic Lodge

Masonic Lodge
The flight of steps that can be seen ascending between the buildings is Bubby Jock Brae. Compare NS2776 : Bubbly Jock Brae, Greenock, a view down from the top of the Brae; the new sign mentioned there does not appear to have been left in place for long.

That road that runs left to right in the present view is West Stewart Street.

The lodge is also shown in an earlier photograph: NS2776 : Masonic Lodge, Greenock. Three tablets can be seen on the near side of the building. From left to right, they read as follows:

Left (shown in NS2776 : World War I memorial tablet): "Lodge Greenock St John No 175. This tablet is erected in memory of the brethren of this lodge who laid down their lives in the Great War which began on 4th August 1914. 'Greater love hath no man than this". Anno Domini 1920."

Middle (shown in NS2776 : Masonic tablet): "Lodge Greenock St John No 175. Charter granted 1st February 1790. This Masonic Temple was erected by the brethren of Lodge Greenock St John No 175. Foundation stone laid with full Masonic honours by Bro. James Reid J.P.D.L. Right Worshipful Master and Provincial Grand Master Depute Renfrewshire West on Saturday 6th February 1897, Year of Masonry 5901."

Right (shown in NS2776 : World War II memorial tablet): "Lodge Greenock St John No 175. This tablet is erected in memory of the brethren of this lodge who made the supreme sacrifice in the Second World War 1939-1945. 'At the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them.' Anno Domini 1950."

[The "Year of Masonry" mentioned on the middle tablet is 4004 more than the year AD. Hence 1 AD would be 4005; the preceding year, 1 BC (there is no year zero), would therefore be 4004, and (easy to see by symmetry) 4004 BC would be year 1. This seems to be based on Archbishop Ussher's calculations, which supposedly showed that the world was created in that year.]

For another detail from the building, see NS2776 : Rising sun. On the side beside the steps (Bubbly Jock Brae) is an arch with a carved keystone: NS2776 : Masonic Lodge: keystone detail. That arch is, in the present picture, visible directly above the head of the man walking along the pavement.
