Inverkip Street Burial Ground
Inverkip Street Burial Ground
This is a view diagonally across the burial ground, from the south-east corner, looking to the north-west. The slanting memorial in the foreground is one of several for the Fullarton family, who were among the earliest applicants for burial in this ground. The obelisk that can be seen left of centre is for the minister George Moscrip: NS2776 : Memorial to George Moscrip.

Thomas Nugent has three earlier pictures of this burial ground LinkExternal link / LinkExternal link / LinkExternal link and a picture of its entrance: NS2776 : Old graveyard. He also has a set of pictures taken in the adjacent NS2776 : Duncan Street Burial Ground; see that item for the links.
Inverkip Street Burial Ground

This burial ground opened in 1787; the existing one at the Old West Kirk had, by then, proved too small for Greenock's growing population. See a Geograph article LinkExternal link for a more detailed history. For all of the inscriptions, see "Renfrewshire MI pre-1855" (vol 1). The adjacent Duncan Street Burial Ground LinkExternal link was created in 1816. These grounds were closed up in 1859, having been superseded by Greenock Cemetery: LinkExternal link
The Inverkip Street Burial Ground is discussed in the last few pages of LinkExternal link (PDF).
