From the shaft opening it is over 200 metres vertical drop to the Cowburn Tunnel on the Manchester to Sheffield (Hope Valley) rail line. The tunnel although just over 2 miles in length is not the longest on the line that honour belongs to Totley Tunnel at 3.5 miles long. Cowburn Tunnel was opened by Queen Victoria in 1893 followed by the opening of the rail link in 1894.
