Air shaft for Butterley Tunnel
Air shaft for Butterley Tunnel
Although not visible, the Cromford Canal passes through this square - underground, in the 3km-long Butterley Tunnel. This is one of three air shafts that provided ventilation for the tunnel. The canal horses would have been led along the road in the foreground while the men were legging the boats through the tunnel. Legging entailed lying on the roof of the boat and moving it along by pushing with the feet against the roof of the tunnel. It was closed in 1900 after a roof fall.
