Dempster's Stone
Dempster's Stone
This 500mm high upright stone on the northern slopes of Meaul marks the spot where the Covenanter John Dempster was shot by Robert Grierson of Lag’s dragoons in 1686. He was pursued by the dragoons, who were based at Garryhorn Farm, to this spot on Meaul where he was killed. This is a view north-northwest towards Loch Doon. A small plaque in the grass beside the stone was set up by the Scottish Covenanters Memorial Association in 1986. It reads:-

On this spot was martyred
By Grierson of Lag’s dragoons
