Eaton Park pavilions in snow
Eaton Park pavilions in snow
At around 9am on a still morning, the overnight covering of powdery/feathery snow is largely untouched and has not yet melted from the tree branches. With the sun just emerging from the retreating snow clouds, a shallow layer of mist has formed just above the ground, giving an ethereal quality.

The park, dating from 1928, is one of a number around Norwich whose design and construction was overseen by then Parks Superintendent, Captain A E Sandys-Winsch, as an unemployment relief program in the inter-war years (LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link ) ). Distinctive elements include geometric layout and the use of concrete buildings, as seen here in the pavilions and dome of the bandstand. Eaton Park is still well-used thanks to a variety of facilities including a cycle speedway track, croquet and bowling lawns, pitch and putt course, playground, rose garden, model boat pond and a miniature railway, and has recently acquired a "Friends Of" group (LinkExternal link ) and a parkrun (LinkExternal link ). Along with Waterloo, Wensum and Heigham Parks, Eaton Park is on the English Heritage Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest.
